10 Israeli soldiers killed, Gaza marks bleak Eid al-Adha (2024)

  • I'm David Enders, and this is the take.

  • We are coming to you on Sundays with weekly roundups as Israel's war in Gaza continues.

  • Ten Israeli soldiers died on Saturday.

  • Refugees in Gaza weathered another heat wave.

  • Cease fire negotiations appear to have reached an impasse.

  • Today is Sunday, June 16.

  • It is day 254 of the war.

  • More than 37 ,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed.

  • At least 10 Israeli soldiers were killed on Saturday in Gaza, eight in a single attack in the city of Rafa that was claimed by Hamas.

  • This is journalist Akram Al -Satari in Hanunis to the north of Rafa.

  • Situation is extremely tense and it continues to be tense, and the Israeli occupation forces have been targeting all different geographical zones in Gaza.

  • In some of the areas, the situation is more tense than others, and the bombardment is more intensified than others.

  • Like in Rafa, there is continuous bombardment and destruction of the full residential blocks, and this is a replication of the policy and strategy that was followed by the Israeli army in all different areas.

  • Temperatures in Gaza reached 35 degrees this week, further compounding the misery of hundreds of thousands of people who no longer have anything more than a tent for shelter.

  • Gaza also continues to suffer from severe water shortages, and uncollected solid waste is becoming an increasingly serious health threat.

  • Gaza's who have been displaced for the seventh or eighth time in the last eight months are facing some great challenge with the summer starting, the very hot season where they are living in tents that are not standard tents for the summer.

  • Gaza's who are staying in the tents are missing the water that is needed for in this very particular hot season of the year.

  • They are missing the infrastructure in their areas.

  • They have been moving, for instance, in Al -Mawasi area, where there is no sewage network and there is no regular water supply.

  • In the very hot time of the summer, people normally need running water for them to be able to wash and for them to be able to pass as well.

  • That is missing, and the Gaza's who have been struggling to secure in the source of water, or even to adapt their tents to make sure that they can survive the very hot season.

  • Just yesterday, a woman was brought dead to Shradah al -Aksah Hospital because of the very hot weather and because of the very poor conditions of the tents they are living in.

  • U .S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken traveled to the region last week in support of a U .S. proposal for a ceasefire.

  • So far, neither side appears to have entirely signed on.

  • Here's Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reporting from Aman, Jordan.

  • The U .S. is blaming Hamas.

  • It's saying that the amendments that Hamas have made to the ceasefire proposal, some are workable, some are simply unworkable.

  • Anthony Blinken, the U .S. Secretary of State, was very clear.

  • He said, all Hamas had to do was say, yes.

  • But this is a negotiation and Hamas' principal position has not changed.

  • They want a permanent ceasefire and everything that they've asked for that we know.

  • For example, they want a period of ceasefire before the six -week ceasefire begins before they start releasing prisoners in exchange for captives.

  • And then the second part of the ceasefire is they want to make sure that there is an international commitment to keeping Israel outside of the Gaza Strip and they commit it to the third phase, which is the reconstruction of Gaza.

  • So Hamas's demands don't seem on the surface unreasonable.

  • Wednesday saw further escalation along the Lebanese Israeli border as the Israeli military killed a high -ranking member of Hezbollah.

  • Here's Al Jazeera Zainahodir in Lebanon.

  • He was the most senior figure in the movement to happen killed since the confrontations began in October.

  • Hezbollah's initial reaction was to fire a large barrage of rockets, nearly 200 rockets at Israeli military positions in northern Israel.

  • Now, some of those rockets landed quite deep inside Israel, some 20 to 25 kilometers.

  • So that's Hezbollah sending a message to the Israelis.

  • One of its senior officials, a short while ago, threatening Israel that Hezbollah's operations will increase in force, intensity, and quantity in retaliation for the killing.

  • On Saturday in Israel, Andrei Khazlov, a captive rescued by the Israeli military from Gaza earlier this month in a raid that killed more than 270 Palestinians, spoke out in support of negotiations as the only way to bring back the dozens of captives believed to remain in Gaza.

  • And that's the take for Sunday, June 16.

  • Please join us again tomorrow.

  • This episode was produced in Mixed By Me, David Enders, our sound designer is Alex Roldan.

  • Alexandra Locke is the takes executive producer, and Nay Alvarez is Al Jazeera's head of audio.
