Today I finally came to the realization that I couldn't find my cat anywhere I looked. Pound. ASPCA. Adoption Programs. No where.. He was an outside cat because he used to "spray" everything in the house and my parents got sick of it. Got him neutered, he still sprayed everywhere so they put him outside. I was young whenever that happened (six - seven years old) and I really didn't have a say so, but that's what happened. Fast-foreward 10 years, and my Siamese-mix is missing. And has been for at least a week.

We caught him as a feral kitten in one of the neighbor's backyards. She had somewhere around six or seven adult cats that would produce three or four litters of kittens each year. So she asked us if we'd like one, and the animal lover I am, I begged and pleaded for one. He was one of the meanest suckers I've ever seen! Clawed my dad's arms, sliced my wrists as we tried to put him into a crate. He was horrible. But I loved him. Took him home and put him into a large cardboard box. Put the box and cat into a quiet room to let him settle down. My parents, 'til this day, swear up and down that after an hour or so of the cat being in our house, I had him cradled in my arms like a baby saying "He likes me!". Hahaha.

Around the same time my grandma got a kitten and named her Jasmine. So, of course, I named my cat Aladdin. Although I'd like to think that he went to some farm, or some nice family adopted him because they thought he was a stray.. I know the reality is that he more than likely died somewhere. So, in his memory...

R.I.P Aladdin.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand your grief because I've been through it myself. It's not easy making rounds to the shelters. I wouldn't give up on Aladdin just yet if I were you. Keep your eyes peeled on the local found ads, post some lost ads in the petstore and area animal hospitals. I even tacked a lost flier on the back windshield of my car--not that it helped get my cat back but it did get the word out because random strangers mentioned seeing my flier without knowing it was mine.

Did it have a collar?

Did the cat have a collar? Maybe it just hasn't been caught yet and taken to the SPCA or shelter.
You should put up some posters, because maybe some little kid found it and took it home.
Anyway don't give up, cats can find their way home after a while.

Outdoor cat huh?

While I'm glad the disgusting, dangerous, damaging, insidious feral beast was fixed so that it didn't spawn any foul offspring and I know I'm going to come across like a heartless bastard by saying this... I really do hope it's dead. The housecat (House people, it's right in the damn name) is without question THE single most dangerous feral species on the face of the planet. You want to start wiping out local populations of herps (!), birds and small mammals, just let a few of those stinking musking feline butchers loose.

If your cat is dead, just bear in mind that at least it's no longer going to be killing hundreds and thousands of native animals that actually belong in your area anymore. And since I really can't blame the cat itself, as it's just acting on instinct, I hope it was quick. Like a truck or someone who reccognizes what a danger the species is and happens to be a good shot.

I understand where you are coming from, but you have to realize that I am 17 at the time, and in no way capable of defying my parents by bringing the house cat inside. And yes, I would have loved for my cat to have been inside. But again, it's not my house, not my rules.

Well at least this guy lives in Dallas. I was thinking maybe that cat I tried to run over last night on the way home might have been his. But now seeing that it wasn't I am now feeling better about the cat vs Jeep event of last night.

Well, I certainly agree that HOUSE cats should be kept in the HOUSE. Not only to protect native fauna, but statistically, outdoor cats live around 3 years, while indoor cats live 15-20...it's easy to see the correlation between where they live and their life span.

However...
I wouldn't go as far to say that they are the single most dangerous feral species out there...
The single most dangerous, destructive, and in my opinion, vile (though I don't know if feral would be an appropriate word) species EVER would be....

hom*o SAPIENS!

Yes, good old man kind has been responsible for the extinction of thousands upon thousands of organisms, destroyed and rendered impotent thousands upon thousands of rainforests and other habitats, wrecked the environment, and countless other atrocities. There isn't a cat in the world, or even all of them combined, that could even compare to the destruction and loss of life we've caused.

Most of the animals we consider to be pests are pests because we made them pests...i.e. cane toads, rabbits, and pigs in Australia, rats throughout the world, etc. etc. etc. on into oblivion...

Humans are the ULTIMATE pest species...and the sad thing is most of us don't even realize it.

Sorry, I guess it's just the misanthropist in me coming out.

That being said, I do agree that cats should remain indoors.

I'd have to agree, hom*o SAPIENS are the most destructive to herps. I knew this kid in high school, he'd catch horned lizards and impale them to a corkboard. Then he'd use a dart from a homemade blowgun to torture them for hours, and he thought it was the coolest thing on earth. I actually knew a lot of people like that, thinking it was fun to catch lizards and snakes and then torture them.

I've always loved snakes and lizards, I've got one of each and I'd like to do unspeakable things to the kid I personally knew in the above mention.

In 1998 my pug named Pug disapeared. She was an indoor dog, as all of my doggies are, even my Samoyed/Chow is an indoor dog. Anyway, she was about 12-15 (I can't remember) years old and went missing. A local doggy "expert" said she probably went off to die, so everyone gave up hope. A week later the pound called us and said she was there, and we had to pick her up ASAP cause she was in very bad shape. It seems she was outside and got stuck in the underbrush, and because she was so low to the ground her eyes had been scratched really bad so she didn't know where she was and was almost blind. To make a long story short, she regained some of her sight and was spoiled to the end, and in the end she weighed 30 pounds and drank beer (little sips of beer, lots of food). Oh yeah, the screwy part was, when the catcher found her, she was less than a block from my house! AARGH! How "well" did we look for her?

I know what you're going through. My sister's outdoor cat has been missing almost a year (we don't want to think he's dead for her sake). I also hate cats, but I know what it's like to lose a little part of your heart when a beloved pet leaves your life. I agree about the posters. I live 50 miles from my parents but I put one on my car (again more for my sister than practicality). I also plastered the neighborhood and put an ad on Petfinder.com. Unfortunately this cat wasn't chipped and he was a master collar escaper (we found his collar and tags in the woods).

I hope you can find some peace with this, it is harder for a pet to go missing than to know what happened.
