Mr. Fields was born Oct. 28, 1911, in Beaufort County, a son of Anna Pringle Fields and Matthew Fields. He was educated in a local community school and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Horsepond Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Brenda E. Fields and Margaret P. Allen, and a son, Johnny Fields. Survivors include four daughters, Anna B. Washington of Grays Hill, Rosa Lee Travillion of Reading, Annie L.

Washington of Burton and Vernell Washington of Stuart Point; two stepdaughters, Susie Watson of Gardens Corner and Rebecca Evans of Bronx, N.Y.; four sons, Matthew Fields and Joe Fields of Grays Hill, Leroy Washington of Florida and Frank Washington of Stuart Point; two stepsons, Joe Evans of Bronx and Benjamin Evans of Detroit; 21 grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, 36 greatgrandchildren, and 20 step-greatgrandchildren.
