1 McKinley Bulldogs (21-0) in the AAA district championship game at Memorial Auditorium tonight at 8. South, coached by veteran Charles (Red) Ash, in his 35th season at the school and with more than 600 career victories, started off the season with a 53-51 loss.to Akron South and then reeled off 20 straight victories. One of South's easiest victories came Thursday night in the semi-finals of the district when the Wildcats ripped Springfield Township, 73-54. But, South, with one veteran from last season in the starting lineup, 6-1 senior Greg Williams, cannot match the powerful Bulldogs in height or experience. South will have to employ its exceptional quickness to counter the Bulldog assets.
State semi-finalists last season, McKinley is headed by two of the finest guards in the school's history, seniors 6-1 Elmer Jackson and 6-foot Len Washington. Many consider Jackson to be the heart of the team, and he's a sure-fire bet for all-Ohio honors. In the Bulldogs' district semifinal, 77-68, victory over Lincoln's Lions Wednesday night, when Lincoln pulled to within five points of the Bulldogs in the third stanza, it was Jackson who took control. with key baskets and key plays to send his team out of reach. The Bulldogs have two rangy players in 6-7 Roy Groce and 6-5 Carlston McKenzie.
The latter is a regular from last season. It will be difficult for South to match the board work of the pair. McKinley's other starter is 6-2 junior Ray Ellis, who hit for 18 points against Lincoln, his best tournament effort. South's heights consists of Williams and the slender Fontes brothers, 6-1 senior Matt, and 6- foot senior Bud. It was the Fontes' who sparked the easy win over Springfield, each getting 20 points.
